Plenty of Lake Vermilion bass action helped pick up the slack for the less consistent walleye bite last week. We were able to sneak out Monday after dinner and kept 7 for Tuesday’s dinner, and while a handful of guests did just fine catching their limits of walleyes, others seemed to struggle. Our outing found leeches and crawlers to be equally effective, in 14 – 24 feet on Big Bay mid lake structure.
Large mouth bass seemed to be the easiest prey, and several guests reported catching good numbers on many of their outings. Various artificials were working and the trusty leech with a bobber produced some nice smallies. Blue gill were caught for the skillet, and Mark Snell caught this pretty musky.
Disappointing to have to comment on the weather again, but a midweek daytime high of 58 degrees is hardly normal for the second half of July. Fortunately the new week has been more consistent.
Some of the fish we heard about include:
- Largemouth Bass – 21″ Matthew McCarthy, 21″ Mike Vogt, 20″ Bill Peick, 19.5″ Bill Peick, 19″ Bill Peick, 18.5″ Colt Leonard, 18″ Joe Ryan.
- Smallmouth Bass – 18″ Zach Hrvol.
- Walleyes – 26″ Debbie Ryan, 25″ Matthew McCarthy, 24″ Paul Hrvol, 22″ Joe Ryan, 21″ Dan Wallenberg.
We have one short stay in Cabin 10, one bedroom, for 3 nights starting on July 29th, and a mix of 3 or 4 night stays starting mid week, August 8th if you have any time to head up north.
Stop wishing….Come fishing!
