Can the Lake Vermilion weather be too nice? Depends on who you ask. We had some families focused on using the pool, tubing, cruising the lake and taking in the tourist attractions, and for them the past week’s weather was just perfect. For those who were fishing muskies, the mid 70 to mid 80 blue sky calm wind days were not what they were hoping for.
So how did people do? While lots of muskies were seen and several were boated, the largest came in at 46″ and there were several under the 40″ mark. As for the bass fishing, Jim Lamping and Sue Perkins had some really good days, doing well just after they arrived. While there weren’t any huge ones in their 30+ fish days, they were happy for all the bass action they enjoyed and chased northerns a little bit too.
Walleyes have continued to fall in the eater or soon to be eater size ranges. Trolling crank baits continues to produce fish as well as lindy rigging with crawlers. If you are heading north and leeches are your bait of choice for walleyes or smallmouth bass, you might want to pick some up on the way as they are hard to come by up here. Won’t be long though before the minnow bite comes back around.
In addition to lots of eaters, some of the fish we heard about include:
Walleyes: 22″ Troy Workman.
Muskies: 46″ Dave Novak, 40″ Ryan Schroud, 40″ Dave Novak.
Lake Vermilion water temp continues to sit around 75 degrees. We could use some rain after this long stretch of dry warmth, but sounds like it is on its way!
Over the remainder of August, we have a handful of spots with a couple partials and one full week option each week, except for the week of September 15th when we are down to a couple 6 night stays starting on Sunday or week long Sunday to Sunday stays, arriving on the 16th.
