Lake Vermilion walleyes and muskies and bass….. In typical fashion, the up and down weather of September produced the same up and down fishing action. The walleye and bass proved to be the most consistent bite last week although they didn’t get too much pressure. Many were scouting the muskies in preparation for the weekend’s PMTT Mega tourney. Here is one caught by Kevin Rabska, putting him on our EBL Wall of Fame. (50.5″)
The bite during the tourney was inconsistent, with several fish coming during small windows of time and reports of a team seeing 20+ fish on a day they couldn’t get any of them to take the bait. Congrats to Jason Hamernick & John Hoyer on their win. The biggest fish in the tournament was a 54.25″ caught on the first day.
The bass fishing, especially smallies, has continued to provide good action, with a handful of nice ones caught and released. Casting artificials and trolling crankbaits are still working well. We got out to fish walleyes and were pleased with both the numbers and some better size this time out. Add to that some bonus jumbo perch and a couple big bluegills and we were set for a great fresh fish dinner that night and a limit for the freezer. While we stuck to crawlers, Jason and Chris reported catching the walleyes listed below and their limits of eaters to take home all on minnows.
Some of the fish we heard about include:
Muskies: 50.5″ Kevin Rabska, 42″ Tom Olson
Northern: 37″ Josh Lovell
Smallmouth Bass: 20″ Derek Rooney, 19.25″ Jerry Lovell, 19″ Jerry Lovell, 18.5″ Jerry Lovell, 18″ Mike Marion
Walleye: 23″ Jason Kuehne, 22″ Chris Iverson, 21.5″ Jason Kuehne
Lake Vermilion water temp was mid 64 yesterday, but cool temps last evening and the rest of the week should improve the deep water bite. If you haven’t set up your plans to fish Vermilion one more time this season, do it now! We only have one small cabin the rest of this week. There are a couple spots for the last week of September starting on the 22nd including the weekend of the 28th & 29th, which can be some of the best walleye action of the year.
Stop wishing…Come fishing!
