Lake Vermilion Memorial Day weekend fishing news found mixed results, with the water temp spiking in the shallow bays to push 80 degrees, moving shallow fish in search of deeper, cooler water.   While some guests limited out there were spans of time when the high sun and unusually warm heat made the mid day bite a little tough.

Earlier in the week, Brad & Jane Ayer had good success fishing deeper spots, 30 – 35 feet, eating many meals of skillet perfect walleyes, just like these!

Plenty of eaters!

Bass and panfish are pre-spawn and active, with several nice smallies being caught.  Northern have been caught in the shallow bays, and the anticipation of Muskie Opener on Saturday is being fueled by lots of fish being seen.

Once again it was the youngsters this weekend that were best rewarded for their efforts.   Dylan got a couple day head start on the rest of his buddies and had things pretty well scouted out, with a nice mix of big fish and eaters to round out their holiday weekend up north.  You can see more of their photos on our Facebook page.  http://facebook

While minnows continue to be productive, artificial baits are catching their fair share of fish too.  Dan Marxer & John Helgestad spent some time with Lake Vermilion guide Buck Lescarbeau, and were able to return to those spots the following day catching 30 on their own, several perfect size 16’s for the skillet. Just the way it is supposed to work!

Some of the fish we heard about include:

Walleyes:  25″ Dylan Ealy, 24″ Matt Arneson, 22″ Kendall Wolf

Northern:  36″ Dylan Ealy

As the end of May is fast approaching, don’t let the chance to fish Vermilion pass you by.  While next week kicks off the span of mainly week long stays, there is one spot for a long weekend, with arrival any day this week and leaving Sunday.  We have one spot for 3 nights starting on June 6th and one spot for the week of June 23rd.

Stop wishing…come fishing!!
