August fishing on Lake Vermilion holds steady as we approach the midpoint of the month. Last week continued where the prior week left off, with Lake Vermilion guide Buck Lescarbeau leading our guests to some productive spots. The Johnsons and their grandson Jordan were just short of their limits on a 1/2 day outing when they arrived on Saturday, Jordan taking big fish honors with a 23″ walleye he caught & released. Their next 2 days on the lake were productive as well. Slip bobbers were the method of choice.
After a far too long break from Lake Vermilion, Shawn Anderson returned and found the bass right off the bat, catching several beauties before spending the latter part of the week catching walleyes. For many trolling crank baits was a pretty reliable method this past week. We had some luck doing that one evening, but regretted not bringing live bait as we ran across many concentrations of walleyes we wished we could stop to lindy rig.
David Sue caught a pair of 19’s, one a largemouth and the other a smallie. His boat mate Jeff Wenc caught a 19″ smallie as well. Steve Rode caught his PR largemouth, a 19″.
Several nice northerns were caught and released too. Casting artificials both in the weeds and along islands produced some nice northerns in the 24 – 36 slot. Jeff Flowers caught & released this one.
Some of the fish we heard about include:
Musky: 44″ Jim Rush
Walleyes: 23″ Mark Johnson, 23″ Jordan Richtsmeier, 21.5″ Amanda Johnson, 20.5″ Sarah Young, 20″ Lee Johnson.
Largemouth Bass: 19″ Steve Rode, 19″ David Sue, 18″ Jeff Flowers.
Smallmouth Bass: 19″ David Sue, 18″ Bill Fitzgerald X2, 18″ Shawn Anderson.
We are in the midst of another warm spell, but there is relief in sight with highs in the low 70’s coming our way. Hopefully the cold front will charge things up again like it did last time. Water temp is just above 76 degrees.
It is about the first time this season, but we have a long weekend option in Cabin 2 starting this Friday. Then we have a couple spots the week of August 18th.
Stop wishing….come fishing!
