Late July fishing on Lake Vermilion was a bit inconsistent, with some guests doing well while others seemed to struggle. There were numbers of walleyes caught, but several were just short of keeper size. On the flip-side there were some slot fish released. The Tinsley guys bumped their May trip back to July to catch some kinder weather, and while the conditions were definitely nicer, the fish were in their typical summer spots, leaving them fishing lots of spots that were new to them. Fortunately they reported catching walleyes on every spot they tried. Others caught walleyes in 25 – 30 feet of water, with their biggest coming in at 19.5″ Crawlers are the bait of choice right now.
Bass continue to provide nice action and some that targeted northerns had fun. The leech and bobber presentation is still the most consistent method for bass. This picture was shared by Valerie Wojtkiewicz – a 19.75″ smallie.
Prime time for muskies should be just around the corner. Water temp has hovered in the high 70s, and cooler nights have set in. The high water that has hung around all season is beginning to recede as the Pike River dam has finally stopped running.
Some of the fish we heard about include:
Walleyes: 27.5″ Doug Miller, 24″ Mike Hammond, 24″ Mike Alting, 22″ Pat Cochran, 21.5″ Burl Tinsley.
Smallies: 19.75″ Valerie Wojtkiewicz.
We have 1 spot beginning August 17th and from then on most weeks there are some partial week stays and a couple week long stays. Now is the time to finalize that last Vermilion trip of the season – fall fishing at its finest!
Stop wishing…Come fishing!
