Lake Vermilion opener 2016 fishing reports were favorable, with most of our guests eating fish and wrapping up their visit with an outing to catch their limit to take home. Minnows were the bait of choice, and based on the locations they shared with us, active fish were spread out in many areas of the lake, with just as much variety in terms of depth. Four feet to thirty feet!
We have much to be thankful for as we were reminded of just how much we appreciate those returning guests that continue to make our resort their Lake Vermilion opener home. They have put in their time learning the lake and were rewarded for their perseverance as they endured what could likely be the most brutal weather conditions of our 17 openers on the lake. While a few groups reported finding schools of 10 – 12″ fish, for the most part our guests caught plenty of 14 – 17 inch eaters. Big fish our guests told us about include these released walleyes:
24.5″ Brady Doran
23.5″ Jay Wenning
22.5″ Steve Krake
22″ Steve Krake
21.5″ Jeff Doran
20″ Steve Lind
The picture below shows one of many highlights of the weekend. Elena Pedino traveled from Cuneo, Italy earlier in the week to join her boyfriend and his family for her first Northwoods fishing experience. After landing an unusual catch on Saturday, a 4 lb. sucker, she quickly mastered the technique of catching walleyes, getting her own limit on Sunday, and better yet — mastering the fillet knife like a pro, cleaning fish with the best of them. Reports are that she was baiting her own hook, tying her hooks, driving the boat and catching her walleyes. Another bright spot for us was when the Lind crew was checking out and the youngster in the crew – a H. S. junior – was lobbying to go out slip bobber fishing just “one more time”!!! Gotta love that. We appreciate the business and lack of weather complaints from all who were with us for opener and look ahead to the next round of guests who will arrive in the next couple of days – with the outlook for much better weather to greet them.
Stop wishing —Come fishing!
