Lake Vermilion smallmouth bass fishing stays strong as the end of August approaches. Good numbers of smallies continue to be caught, with crankbaits and leeches producing the most fish. There were a handful of good sized bass caught, but it was a more a week of good numbers. Levi caught this nice one, and Jim Ryberg reported catching 2 five pounders and Jim Swanson caught an 18″.
Those that were hoping for a muskie had some fish on, but they never saw the bottom of the net. Lake Vermilion water temp continues to sit between 71 & 72 degrees depending on the location.
Walleye reports were mixed, but those that caught reported some hot windows that turned a less than stellar outing into a good one when limits were caught in short spans of time. Chris and Dave Korolewski caught a nice mess and added in some jumbo perch, putting the spot anchor mode on the new trolling motor on his rental boat to use. Seems like more nice bluegills than usual are being caught in walleye spots too. Chris Studier and his family had a nice fish fry at the end of their short stay, with leeches producing their walleye dinner. In most instances, depth was critical, as often a drift just outside the right zone was unproductive. One thing is clear – there are a ton of fish that will be perfect size when next season rolls around. Some guests reported catching more numbers than ever.
Dave headed out with Eric and Ryan and they caught all their walleyes on crawlers Sunday morning, making for this fine fresh walleye and perch lunch.
As August wraps up, we have a spot this week and an option for Labor Day weekend. We have one cabin the week of September 1st and a couple options each week through the end of September. It is hard to beat September on Lake Vermilion for a long list of reasons so…
Stop wishing…Come fishing!
