As the last week of August kicks off we wrap up a week that was short on great weather – kind of a gloomy week, finding us often wishing it would just let loose and rain, rather than threaten to rain for hours on end. When the sun did poke through things warmed up quickly.
Last Saturday night it looked like it might be a great week for muskies as 16 year old Justin Fuller boated his 46″ personal record on the day their Lake Vermilion vacation began. While there were reports of several other fish seen, Ryan Hush boat the only other muskie for the week – a 40″er later in the week.
Once again the smallmouth bass fishing proved to be the most stable offering, with many outings of a hot smallie bite reported. Mark Ewert and the rest of his Missouri crew found the day many others seemed to struggle to be their best day, with “over 20 big smallies” being caught. They had some walleyes in the mix too over the course of their short stay.
The walleye bite was good when they were active, with several cabins reporting some trips out that were slow, and others that were terrific, often on the same day. Timing was the key. Didn’t much matter whether they used leeches or crawlers. The key was to stay at it, as they would eventually turn on. Once again there were several fish frys and a limit for the road.
Fish that our guests told us about include:
Muskies: Justin Fuller – 46″, Ryan Hush – 40″
Smallmouth Bass: Danielle Roy – 21″, Ron Milbeck – 18.5″, Kurt Ewert – 18.5″ – Brian Ewert – 18″, Steve Terrell – 18″, Mark Ewert -18″, Kurt Ewert – 18″, Brian Ewert – 18″, Bill Schaefer – 18″, Ron Milbeck – 18″
Walleyes: Mike Griffore – 23″, Tyler Jerkovich – 23″, Brad Griffore – 21″, Brad Griffore – 21″, Quinnly Hush – 20″, Justin Fuller – 20″
We have a couple mid-week spots for this week prior to the busy weekend when things are all full. Looking forward to seeing several of our returning guests in the next several weeks when they get their September Lake Vermilion fix!
Have a terrific week!
