Lake Vermilion 2012 Opener @ Everett Bay Lodge
Perfect weather and a walleye bite that got better as the day went on made for a very nice weekend. While some of the “popular” opener spots were a bit less productive, several boats had good success fishing the mud flats with minnows in depths ranging from 15 to 35 feet. Fish in the 16 to 17.5 inch range brought lots of smiles, with a report of a 6:30 p.m. outing producing a limit in a 1/2 hour. Several walleyes over 20 inches were caught and released as well. First time Lake Vermilion fishermen took the early part of the day to get their bearings, but by evening they too had figured things out for evening success that resumed on Sunday morning for them.
The best part of opener this year was the enthusiastic involvement of the “next generation” of fishermen. Seemed to be a good number of youngsters in the opener crowd this weekend, and they not only caught fish, but were quick to take part in the lively chatter that escalated as the day went on. “Thanks” to those dads and grandpas that are doing their part to “take a kid fishing.”
The next wave of early season guests begin arriving Monday, and the forecast looks to bring some very comfortable temps.
